Understanding New Zealand’s Visas for Dependent Children Requirements
Introduction
Do you want your dependent children to join you in New Zealand? The Dependent Child Visa enables children who are financially dependent, single, and within the appropriate age range to live with their parents in New Zealand. This visa is applicable whether you hold a resident, temporary, or work visa.
Qualification Criteria for Visas for Dependent Children
Immigration New Zealand (INZ) offers different dependent child visas based on the parent’s visa type:
- Dependent Child Visa for Resident Visa Holders
- Dependent Child Visa for Temporary Visa Holders
- Dependent Child Visa for Worker Visitor Visa Holders
- Dependent Child Student Visa
Each visa category has specific requirements related to the child’s age, financial dependence, and relationship with the parent.
Dependent Child Visa for Resident Visa Holders
For resident visa holders, the requirements depend on the child’s age:
- Under 17 years: The child must be single.
- 18-20 years: The child must be single and have no children.
- 21-24 years: The child must be single, childless, and financially dependent on an adult.
If the child is 16 or older, they may also need to meet English language requirements. Children included in the original resident visa application but not listed must have a valid reason for omission.
Dependent Child Visa for Worker Visitor Visa Holders
If your child’s visa is based on your New Zealand work visa, they can:
- Stay in New Zealand for the same duration as your visa.
- Visit and explore New Zealand or study for up to 3 months (longer study periods require a student visa).
Dependent Child Student Visa
If your children need to attend school in New Zealand, they will require a Dependent Child Student Visa. This visa allows them to attend primary or secondary school and may grant them domestic student status, enabling free education. For tertiary studies, a separate student visa is required.
Note: Dependents of some visa holders, such as student visa holders, may only qualify if the parent is a PhD student or on a scholarship.
Processing Time and Cost
Processing times for Dependent Child Visas vary depending on the parent’s visa type. Temporary dependent visas may be processed in a few weeks, while applications tied to resident visas may take several months. Additional evidence and documentation are often required to ensure a favourable outcome.
